My Sin, My Soul

Image above found here.

Lolita.

Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: The tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta. She was Lo, plain Lo, in the morning, standing four feet ten in one sock. She was Lola in slacks. She was Dolly at school. She was Dolores on the dotted line. But in my arms she was always Lolita.

Tonight is the first official kickoff to our Book club and the first book is - you guessed it: Lolita by Vladmir Nabokov. It is known as one of the Top 10 novels of our time and I was very excited to read it (especially since he wrote it in Ashland, Oregon - yay OR!). I will admit that his writing style is so perfect and complex, it's almost difficult to get into. But once I understood the flow of his wording and structure, I was able to fully ingest his tone and the despair poor Humbert Humbert had in this doomed love for his little Nymphet.

I wonder what situations in my own life were doomed before they even got off the ground. Only in hindsight do you tend to see the signs.

UPDATE: Book Club was a success and we all discussed themes and ideas over wine and cheese & crackers. Though we could never determine if Humbert Humbert really did love Lolita or if he was just obsessed with her. Can't wait to read "The Time Travelers Wife" next month!
