It's better to be Heavy

I'm a Dior mascara snob.

{Heavy eye makeup is my fave}

I believe in the sanctity and holiness of expensive mascara.

Now before you judge me or characterize me as an all around snooty person... trust me- there are a plethora of things I ALWAYS buy cheap:

  • eyeliner
  • tank tops
  • body wash
  • makeup-remover
  • etc. (and I'm sure you have your own list of things you prefer to splurge on and things you scrimp on)

But mascara? I believe in the price tag.

{So worth the money}

Despite this, I have a lot of friends who told me to give Cover Girl mascara a whirl. They swore to me that the two new mascaras "LastBlast" & "LastBlastLENGTH" were all the quality for about 7 bucks. Not one to surpass a good deal (with good word of mouth no less), I decided that my next mascara purchase would be Cover Girl in lieu of my beloved Dior Blackout.

The outcome?

Awful. I mean, truly awful. The mascara had barely any lift, instead of it brightening up my eyes, it hardly lined the lashes. I wondered if people only think this is good because they have never tried a good mascara.

Where's Oprah when you need her? Make it rain Dior Blackout for everyone!

Now I'm fully aware that this might be a problem only I have, see- I'm a big fan of heavier eye makeup.

I totally get the appeal of Bobbi Brown-esque makeup and it does look beautiful on girls. But for me (for better or worse), I like the grungier, heavier look- whether that is in reference to just what catches my eye as I flip through magazines or just what I try to emulate at home: Heavier eye makeup is just my taste.

Exhibit A:

{Year after year, hair color after hair color, I like my darker eye makeup}

That doesn't mean that I always have a lot of makeup on. I spend plenty of days with minimal makeup or no makeup at all... but, those aren't really the days I'm taking a lot of pictures or doing anything particularly newsworthy.

{Me on a very low makeup day.}

Because of this natural draw to heavy eye makeup, I prefer heavier mascara. Thus, I will be going back to Dior Blackout immediately (if not sooner) and ceasing any future purchases of CoverGirl mascara. However, I'm not one to waste money and was hoping to find a way to keep the two tubes I already purchased around- and today, I found the perfect place for them.

I had a job interview today. And low makeup is key for such an event. Professional aspects are the one exception to my heavy eye makeup. I barely wear makeup to work.

Thus, I will keep my barely-there, crappy, cheap mascara and wear it in the office. Because THAT'S where I can stand to be without my beloved Dior.

But no matter how often I have to pull the low-maintenance look, to me-

It's just a personal thang.

What is something YOU think is worth the extra money?

Here's what I think is (and isn't)

PS- Happy St. Patty's Day!!!! I hope you have fun celebrating half MY HERITAGE :) I'll do my Patty's post tomorrow when I actually have some pics of what I did.

i love diorshow, too! it's definitely worth the splurge:) my sister loves cover girl's lash blast, too, but i'm with ya, it doesn't compare to diorshow! for me, i think designer denim (at a discounted price, of course) is worth the splurge hehe they just fit better:D great post, caitlin!

I've never tried either, so I can't comment much lol! But I'll try to stay away from cover girl's mascara after reading your review:P

I think you always look great with heavier eye make up, maybe you could do a tutorial for us next?

I tend to spend more on food and lately, shoessss!!

You rock heavy eye make-up really well... you look fabulous. I'm not really a make-up junkie as I always do the natural no-make up look.

I would splurge on my bags though... I love premium designer bags. xoxo

Yeah, I guess most people have this sort of lists of thing they prefer to save their money on... I'm just thinking now if I'm one of thsoe people lol Because you know, I'm teh type who has no problem wtih spending money as long as the money are there to be spend. I'd rather get one good and pricey item than 5 of cheaper stuff. I was born with very sophisticated tastes and my mom hates it to this day, even now that I make my own money lol But I guess I don't spend much on bodywash either... I have a very sensitive skin so I always use Johnson and Johnson's baby stuff lol I've tried lots of others and their products are the only ones that work for me, so when it comes to bodywash, body lotion and body oil is something babies would use haha

I currently use Dior Blackout, btw. It's not my type of mascara though, but it was a gift from my aunt, so I didn't really choose. My favorite mascara is Chanel's Inimitable :)

..well , I do think that good foundation must be good , but about price , I recently tried YSL foundation which is mega expensive and it was - so so , nothing special really and then there is Maybelline dream foundation which is about 8 £ and it's perfect , honestly , so silky and kind to skin..
I'm about cheap shower gels but more expensive body mousturizers ..tank vests everywhere are the same ..
I love big eyelashes and all the dramatic look eyes ..Mascaras always let me down but max factor ones are actually ok ..

I used to be a diorshow snob too but i found that for me it isn't any better than my loreal voluminous carbon black. It's not worse either. I just can't find a reason to spend the money on it. Now with shoes...oh yes. I'll spend a gripload.

And covergirl is just wack. I've never liked their products so consider me an anti-cover girl snob. Ha!

BAGS. I LOVE, love, expensive bags. And ofcourse perfumes, the classier they are, the more expensive they tend to be!

I'm such a glassic pink and green CoverGirl mascara girl. It's cheap and does the trick for me. I have issues spending a ton on anything, really, but I recently bought a great bag and promised to stop dropping $30 here and there on cute Target totes. I have a big girl bag now!

I have heard wonders about that mascara...I may have to splurge on that next. If I was going to splurge on anything, it would be for the EYES! Mascara is a MUST have!

I am all about the eyes, as well. I don't wear any makeup other than mascara, lipgloss, and eyeliner - therefore, I always want ones that are dramatic! :)

I understand your point, but I have used tons of mascaras and I loved many different ones. My most most most favourite one is the Lancome Virtuose, I think it is the best, next I liked the hypnose, I also used to like the Diorshow, but in the end I was disappointed bcs it was not enough intense. But i also loved the Maybelline Falsies and the yellow one, I don't remember the name. Great post!

I really have to admit that I haven't got any experience with the pricey mascaras. I always go for the middle class segment and I am a little bit too lazy with trying out. But your post encouraged me to spend a little bit more time with the mascara choice... because we're worth it :)

I agree. I have been trying to go cheap on the mascara recently but I miss my YSL False Lash Effect! Dior is great too. Cool blog!

Yeah...I use the one you hate. I live in Northern California where no one wears makeup. No kidding. It was a hard adjustment after living in LA. Now I'm bare a lot too. You get used to it, although I avoid mirrors on those days. tee hee HOlly:)

I'm with you — dark, heavy makeup is hot. And you obviously make the distinction between work makeup and social makeup, which is important. Basically I like the dramatic effect of it, which adds mystery to the person wearing it.

love it, so perfect

finally, someone who knows what they're talking about, i agree with you, i tell people all the time, if all you've tried are cheap mascaras then how would you know its the best.expensive mascaras are the best!! hands down. Dior and YSL.
cover girl mascaras are for plain looks. You get what you pay for

I've definitely used Diorshow Blackout mascara . . . what's so funny is that I prefer Dior for almost all makeup--I swear by Dior Airflash foundation, LOVE the Eyeshow shimmery pot in undressed beige for highlights, and think Dior pencil eyeliner is the best . . . but I just haven't been convinced that the mascara is worth it! Right now I'm using Maybelline's Lash Stiletto, and so far it does for my lashes just what the expensive ones do . . . so funny our makeup preferences :)
