Hawaii Week: It's not the Journey, it IS the Destination.

They often say, "it's not the destination, it's the journey". I always wish I could say that but here's the thing... I have a tremendous fear of flying. This fear didn't come about in 2001 after we were attacked in the air rather, it has been with me since this flight I had coming home from Nebraska in about 1994. I went to the bathroom when I shouldn't have and thus was trapped in there during horrible turbulence. To this day, turbulence freaks me out. I am fine on a smooth flight, I'll sit and read and do crosswords but any bumps and I have to quite literally talk myself out of a panic attack.

It's no fun.
But neither is living in a world without air travel. I promised myself forever that my fear of flying wouldn't ever stop me from boarding a commercial jet because to opt out of such a task would doom me to never experience the world as it should be experienced.
So because of that, I fly whenever I need to and patiently try to get from point A to point B. However, it is never the journey that excites me when it comes to trips that require me boarding a plane. And in the case of Hawaii, it can't be anything BUT the destination.
I mean really, Hawaii is the uber destination. I left Oregon wearing Ugg boots, a knit, wool hat (I kid you not) and a warm jacket to get off the plane in Hawaii sporting yoga pants, a wife-beater and flip-flops and be sweating. It pains me to know that Hawaii is always this beautiful as I have to whittle ice off my windshield in the winter.
That's why when The Boy and I got off our respective flights in Honolulu, we seized our first day together in sunny, sunny Hawaii. We quickly checked in and even quicker dressed down and headed to the beautiful beach.

{I love this of us. So dorky.}

By the end of the day, we were as obsessed with Hawaii as Carrie is with Shoes and we still had the rest of our trip left in front of us. It was a wonderful way to kick-off the next few days.

Happy Monday folks!!!
PS- as I wrote this, I was watching "The Sandlot", could that movie be any better? Nope!

And as for flying - I had no idea you were scared of it, but it's very refreshing to hear that you're not letting it get in the way of you enjoying the world!

Hi Caitlin, first of all, thanks for your thought on my legs post, I see no reason why you should be jealous of those legs, you have stunning legs, and you can take that from an expert...hehe...

I think we have more or less the same idea about flying, I am sh*t scared of flying, and it also has nothing to do with 9/11. I hate turbulence, and I think in my case it is more a case of I am not in control. Not that I have any wish to pilot a passenger airliner.

I however love airplanes, as long as I can admire them from where I am safely on the ground.
I have flown helicopters a lot as a policeman, and that is totally enjoyable, I used to love that, but there, even if I was not in control, I was right next to the guy who was, so there was no uncertainties. You also do not feel turbulence in a chopper. You should go for a flip sometime.

Now about Hawaii, I envy you, no I lie, it is my turn to be downright jealous, but fortunately I live right close to the sea, and have no snow or even frost to worry me. Close enough for me, cos I do not see myself flying to Hawaii.

Hope your week is going well.

Colin.
Ps, I do apologize for hogging your comment space. :)

WAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH :Yes I am totally that pathetic!! I have no shame. Hawaii is my absolute favorite place in all the land and I feel like pitching a fit b/c I wanna go now, too!!

My friend is going to Uni there and her facebook updates make me wanna gouge my eyes out.

I am so very very happy you got to visit that wonderful place. Wouldn't you just run down the tarmac and onto a 4 seater to go again?? okay that might be a bit extreme...but close, right??

I saw the link for your Hawaii posts on your birthday post to the Boy...Looking at the pictures makes me want to go back SO BADLY!!!!! Like, I want to lay on the floor and kick my feet until someone agrees to take me back to Maui. Why do we have to have these things called jobs and responsibilities??
