My Closet Go Boom!

Last week, I had the genius idea to do a Blog post about my Closet. I've never done one and I ALWAYS enjoy being a bit voyeuristic and looking into others' closets so I figured it was due time for me to shed some light on mine. That's why on my way out the door, I snapped this picture below of me in my very first walk-in-closet. I had plans to go into it the next day and clean it a bit and show all the nooks and crannies- you know, really put you into my changing space
Before you say anything like "OMG- your closet is totes not that cool and pretty messy", let me tell you a couple things (starting with 'shut up'): I live in a Studio Apartment in a very old building. This closet is the ONLY closet in the entire space and if you know anything about Studios, they aren't exactly known for their size. So I don't have the luxury of putting all my memory tubs (seen stacked behind me) in a garage where they'd be better suited or my Linens in a Linen Closet, or my Laundry in the Laundry Room or my Ski Gear in an attic. Nope, it's either in the closet or out where everyone can see. So think of all my superfluous, gigantic sundries (if you will) as 90's Ricky Martins- better in the closet. Secondly, I know my closet isn't fit for a Princess but do you know how much I love it? I can WALK into it and everything in there is mine- to me, totally worth showing off, even if isn't color-coordinated and lined in silk carried in by Doves.

Well, that was until last night. As I lay in bed, drifting off to sleep... I heard a huge thud originate in the closet. Knowing that something fell and assuming it was a one of my tubs or something like that, I decided to deal with it in the morning. OKAY, let's cut to the morning shall we?

I'm not a Morning person in general and thus hate rousing myself to be at work at 7:30 every day but I do it because I have to with no time to spare. What I DON'T need to deal with in the morning??? The result of the "THUD".
Yup, my ENTIRE 8 foot bar on the right side of my closet came crashing down, taking boxes, clothes... EVERYTHING with it.

I gasped. Grabbed the nearest dress and headed off to work in agony. WHHHY.

All day I was dreading coming home and dealing with what lay ahead. I love clothes but man-oh-man do I hate them sometimes. Upon arrival post-the-long-tiring-business-day, I got into my ugly, slave attire and began moving my finely hung wardrobe out of the closet so that the Landlord could fix the bar on Wednesday.
But wait, did I mention I live in a STUDIO downtown?? There's no extra bedroom or safe place to put my clothes. So they're here. On my Bed. Piled huge, high and disgustingly as I curl up on the couch tonight as if my wife had found my secretary on my lap at the Company Christmas Party.
So after a lot of sweat, annoyed thoughts and cuss words, I made a manageable workspace for my Landlord... and then Mama and her beautiful hair (see for yourself) needed a nice glass of wine.
And because I'm a good Roommate who lives alone, I was sure to offer Wine to all my in-house favorites:
{Clockwise from top LEFT: Frank, Brit, Demon Dog, My Parents circa 1980 & Holly all had some wine with me}
{Clockwise from top RIGHT: My PiggyBank, Marilyn, Reggie the Horse all enjoyed a glass of Red. But my Chicago friends??? Well I gave them a bottle. After all, I want to make a good impression for when I get there.}

Speaking of Favorites... thank you Blouse and Skirt side of my closet for acting like the Straight-A student and staying intact, easy to reach and oh-so-cute. I just wish your Sister (the Fallen 8-foot bar on the other side), could be like you.

Hurrumph, goodnight!
Now a poll: Great or GREATEST Closet Blog Post you've ever read?

If that much of my closet collapsed I think I'd scream for 5 minutes straight. And need at least 3 glasses of wine. Seriously.

Best closet hands down! I never had a walk in closet, my mom has two, TWO in her room...& seriously, this is one of my biggest fear. I have wooden rod thing, whenever I hang something up, I always think its going to break. I freakin' love the decor in your apt. Lol, Demon Dog.

Ummm...yes. This is definitely the greatest closet post EVER.

I actually worry that the pole thingie in my closet will fall, as well; therefore, I hardly hang anything on it, which basically makes it useless. :/

Man that sucks! Buuuuuttttt....If you feel the need to purge your closet so that this doesn't happen again, I'm sure I could find some extra room in my closet for your castoffs! :)

Your closet is HUGE! I've been wanting a walk in my whole life and have yet to get one.
LOL, wish I was on your wall so I could've got some of that wine, too! hahaha. Best closet post BY FAR!

you are hysterical! haha I love it - maybe not the best closet post ever but def the funniest closet post ever. I do have to say though, I live in a studio also by myself and the importance of a closet is huge... I wish I could say I had a walk-in, mine is one of those small sliding doors one so I made one whole wall in my apt a closet - good b/c I have so much stuff but bad b/c it takes away so much space that I could use for decorating...
oh and I LOVE that horse on your wall, I kinda want one.

LOL!! You have my vote as the best closet post ever. Was it really just at thud you heard? Something tells me it was like CRASH BANG BOOM and then maybe a little thud. hahaha

P.S. My apartment is filled with Marilyn Monroe and piggy banks too! I like your style...lol

Your walk-in in closet looked fabulous, especially for a studio apartment that looks that pretty. It looks like you accumulate less stuff than I do. Too bad about he weight pulling the upper screws for the closet rod / shelf supports out of the wall. I guess you needed a bigger upper screw into the stud in the wall for the support. The pic you took of yourself pre-thud surrounded by all your pretty and colourful apparel looked fantastic. I can imagine that for an obviously very neat fashionista that must have freaked you out, but I'm sure it will be better than ever in the end. Great closet blog post - I'm hoping for a sequel!

This is a lot of trouble to deal with, but you can always make such thing sound like fun lol :) Aaaaand, your walk in closet looks pretty big, which I love! Hope it all gets fixed and never happens again - then you can color coordinate everything and show us again :)

Sorry to hear that your closet bar fell. That must've been a pain in your butt just trying to clean up a little bit. Hopefully everything gets fixed.

Btw, you've got a ton of clothes. HOW AWESOME! lol I'm jealous. I don't have a huge closet like that.

i've not had this happen, but i was at a friend's house when it happened to her.
i cleaned out my closet earlier this year as a monthly resolution. i used the Space Saver bags for winter stuff, gave a bunch to charity, and now have TONS of room.

oh my goodness! that is a nightmare! okay, i know other people have bigger and legits problems that a broken closet bar - but heck, girl, i am with you! i don't live in a studio, but you and i know how portland is - we are big on older buildings, etc. etc. my walk-in closet is not as big as yours but it is better than the last one i had which was like, let's just say a utility closet clone! love this post, and the wife who just found the secretary on the bed comment! priceless!!

Holy cow Caitlin! Studios are very compact so this is a very nicely sized closet! I checked out a few in Chicago and if the layout is good you have a fair amount of space. You certainly have quite the closet :) It's expansive and I've had readers asked to see the inside...omg there's too much stuff!

Definitely the coolest closet blog post I have ever read! And, you are hilarious! lol. Also love the Breakfast at Tiffany's reference.

Not even sure I'd be able to do a closet post. Maybe after I purge a whole bunch of stuff I haven't worn in several seasons!! thanks for sharing with us, Caitlin!

your closet is so roomy caitlin!!! i know exactly what you mean about studios. i live in one right now, and my closet is so tiny! definitely not a walk in. so consider yourself lucky ;)
your place is so darn cute by the way. i dig your interior decorating style!

My condolences to your lost closet bar. I did laugh that a loud crash would not cause you to miss any sleep in investigating--I am the same way (we have a big monster dog and I assume he'll take care of anything dangerous) until one of the kids or the Mrs. insist that I go see what it was.

Bahahaha I'm loving your generosity with the wine and your "roommates" ;)

That totally happened to our closet when we first moved into this apartment. What the hell! Like, who makes these things?! Maintenance didn't even bat an eyelash when they came to fix it, I guess it must happen often haha.

OMG you handled this beautifully! I am so OCD that I would probably had a nervous breakdown. (Not really.)

So...if I lived closer, I totally would've come and fixed this for you while you drank the wine...

I love closet posts! Would love to see/read more and I think your closet is amazing. Mine isn't near that big!
